Harriet Quinlan is a commercial litigator who advises on trust and estate disputes, relationship property, shareholder issues and contractual claims. She has particular expertise in helping individuals navigate contentious trust and relationship property issues, and also advises insolvency practitioners and creditors in insolvency matters. Harriet has appeared in the Court of Appeal, regularly appears in the High Court and District Court, and acts for clients in multi-million dollar arbitrations and mediations.
Known for her responsive and considered approach, Harriet combines technical expertise with practical advice to help clients achieve efficient and commercially sensible outcomes.

- Advising trustees in responding to applications for removal and claims brought by beneficiaries in complex trust disputes.
- Advising trustees on responding to beneficiary requests for trust information and navigating competing disclosure obligations.
- Advising beneficiaries on trustee proposals to distribute trust assets and wind up trusts, including protecting beneficiaries’ interests in contentious trust restructures.
- Negotiating successful settlements in a number of relationship property disputes, achieving commercial and practical outcomes while avoiding prolonged litigation.
- Obtaining Court orders appointing a receiver to a trust and assisting in the negotiated resolution of a long-running dispute concerning multi-million dollar trust assets in Clarkson v Clarkson [2020] NZHC 3382.
- Obtaining urgent injunctive relief for New Zealand’s largest credit union in proceedings against another credit union.
- Acting for an international software development company to obtain Court orders securing the release of funds held by a global banking institution in NF Global Ltd v Sky Capital Management Ltd [2020] NZHC 2196.
- Acting for companies in successfully setting aside statutory demands and resisting applications to set aside demands in insolvency proceedings, including in Condor International Ltd v Steelhaus 2014 Ltd [2019] NZHC 296.
- Advising liquidators, receivers and creditors throughout complex liquidation and receivership processes, including in Vlasic v Zelande Ltd [2019] NZHC 2152.
- Appearing in the Court of Appeal:
- Successfully representing the mother of a disabled son in a significant human rights judicial review case against the Crown in Attorney-General v Spencer [2015] NZCA 143.
- Acting for a large construction company in a contractual payment dispute in CJ Parker Construction Ltd (in liq) v Ketan [2017] NZCA 3.
- Acting for receivers in defending a challenge to their appointment in Fatupaito v Harris [2018] NZCA 497.
- Acting for a liquidator pursuing recovery of a voidable transaction in Time3 Global Ltd v Norrie (as liquidator of Pakiri Investments Ltd (in liq)) [2016] NZCA 400.
